The skies of Auriin were punctuated by thousands of bursts of colourful light known as stars. It was thought that these stars revealed the positions where the Weird Energy intersected the Prime Material Plane, piercing the bubble that separated the physical world from the eternal void. The stars seemed to allow the transmission of energy (and perhaps matter) between the Prime Material Plane and other pockets of reality that sat elsewhere along the tendrils of weird energy. It was believed by some that should one reach the edge of the sky, one would find that the stars were in fact tunnels to other planes of existence.
Appearance
The stars were roughly circular blotches of light spread across the entire sky of Auriin. They ranged greatly in size, colour and intensity, from the huge white Great Rift, to tiny blue and purple specks that were only visible in the dark of night.
Many of the stars could be seen to pulsate with varying frequency and amplitude. The most notable examples of these being the Great Rift, which fluctuated greatly in size and intensity daily, and the moons, which displayed a monthly cycle.
Notable Stars
The Great Rift
The Great Rift, or the sun, was the largest star in the sky. It waxed and waned daily, emitting a powerful white light and heat during the day, but shrinking to a tiny pin-prick at night. It connected Auriin to a plane of radiant energy, and in religious thought was often connected to the prime deity Lys.
The Moons
The moons were large, significant stars that were most visible at night. Like the sun, the moons waxed and waned; however, they did so at a lower frequencies. The key property that these stars shared was that they all reached their minimum intensity in synchrony every 40 days. It was this regularity upon which the Western Calendar was based.
The moons were each named after constellations in which they were the most significant stars.
The Huntsman's Hand
The Huntsman's Hand, also known as The Houndmaster's Hand, The Huntsman, The Hound or The Wolf, was a white star about a quarter of the size of the sun, named for the Huntsman constellation in which it formed the right hand of a humanoid figure. It had the lowest frequency of the moons, reaching its peak intesity and size only once in a 40 day month. In folklore, the Wolf had links to lycanthropy, with some cultures believing that it was the doorway to a plane of changeability or savagery.
The Hound's Eye
The smallest of the moons, adjacent to The Huntsman's Hand. It was a dim amber in colour, and barely fluctuated in size or intensity throughout the month, thus becomming the brightest moon during the dark moon days, and the dimmest the rest of the month.
The Lady
The Lady was lilac, and a little smaller than the Huntsman's Hand.
The Heart of Muana
The highest frequency moon, rose pink in colour. A portal to a plane of passion. Cycled about once every eight days.
